US Postal Service®: Large Government Deployment

For the US Postal Service®, a satellite network was deployed to 5,000+ locations in less than five months, including remote offices, and is used to support both primary applications and continuity of operations.

Requirements

The United States Postal Service® needed to provide broadband communications to over 5,000 of its sites in the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico to support a variety of applications. In addition, the network needed to support on-demand back-up for a number of larger USPS facilities, as well as portable communications for the US Postal Inspection Service fleet of more than 20 incident response vehicles.

Solution

After analyzing their needs, Spacenet launched a fully managed satellite communications service based on its SkyEdge VSAT platform. That platform includes a combination of individual satellite modems and a router-integrated Cisco VSAT Network Module. These technologies offer high performance broadband service for converged communications including simultaneous support for carrier class voice, two-way video, and broadband data.

Success

Spacenet’s SkyEdge VSAT network design supports a wide range of applications including an innovative video relay service (VRS) for deaf and hard-of-hearing postal employees, multicast content delivery, real-time video broadcasting, VoIP based digital telephone services, as well as routine data transport and point-of-sale transactions. In addition, the satellite network supports the customer’s demands for continuity of operations by pre-positioning emergency portable VSAT kits in strategically selected locations. These kits provide for rapid deployment to Postal Service facilities should they lose their wireline voice and data service in the event of a natural or manmade disaster.

Public Safety: Independent, Redundant & Diverse Network

imageFor a major public safety agency, a satellite network provided an independent, redundant and diverse network to provide continuity of operations and ensure its communications stay running, no matter what.

Requirement

A major public safety agency needed a continuity of operations network solution. It needed a network that could support secure voice and data applications, and that could be integrated into its existing IT infrastructure. It also needed a solution that could withstand varying weather conditions, including high winds.

Solution

Spacenet provided an always-on “hot stand-by” satellite solution integrated with the customer’s primary wireline network. The solution was a custom satellite network, employing the Cisco VSAT Network Module for seamless failover in the case of a primary network outage. In addition, the solution included custom antennas that could withstand high winds of 200mph.

Customer Value

Spacenet’s SkyEdge VSAT solution provided complete voice and data, integrated into the customer’s existing IT infrastructure, which consisted of a terrestrial network. In addition, the solution provided a network backup solution and near 100% network availability.
