Spacenet to Serve 700 Long John Silver's Restaurants Nationwide with Broadband, Two-Way Satellite Communications Network
Quick-service restaurant chain will use satellite-powered IT infrastructure to support high-speed intranet and store polling applications
McLean, VA, November 12, 2001 - Spacenet Inc. today announced it has been selected by Yorkshire Global Restaurants, Inc. (YGR) to deploy a 700-site, broadband satellite communications network. YGR will use the network to connect its Long John Silver's restaurants nationwide. Long John Silver's is America's largest quick-service seafood restaurant chain.
Gilat's Skystar Advantage® VSAT network provides the increased bandwidth and Internet Protocol (IP) support that enables YGR to deploy its retail intranet site and conduct nightly store polling. In the future, YGR expects to expand its use of the Skystar Advantage platform to include credit authorization, broadband Internet access and IP-based security video applications. Network rollout is scheduled to begin this year, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2002.
Glenn West, YGR's Vice President of Information Technology, said, "We are moving quickly to adopt a variety of IP-based applications to improve operating efficiency and customer service. We chose VSAT technology because it provides us with an always-on network connection that is available immediately at all of our locations around the country."
West added, "A high-speed, persistent connection is critical to the deployment of our new web-centric applications that provide real-time information on inventory management, store promotion, human resources, and other important issues. Spacenet's superior support for these types of web-based applications made it a clear choice for this project."
David Shiff, Spacenet's Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said, "As the need to capture and track more information from the field accelerates, cost-effective, persistent broadband connectivity has become more and more critical to the operations of many businesses. Leaders in the restaurant industry have become particularly mindful of this, yet the availability and cost of most solutions have been prohibitive. YGR joins a growing list of enterprises that have found Spacenet's broadband VSAT service brings the full scope of functionality and performance needed to support these emerging applications with highly favorable economics."
