Spacenet introduces new digital telephone service over satellite for business continuity and emergency response applications

McLean, VA, July 9, 2007 – Spacenet Inc. today introduced Connexstar Digital Phone, a carrier class telephone solution available as part of the company’s high-performance Connexstar satellite service. The new Digital Phone service enables customers to make clear digital telephone calls, in addition to receiving business class Internet access, and real-time video over the same high-performance satellite link. Designed for remote locations, mobile command centers or as a backup to existing landline phone services, Connexstar Digital Phone completes a converged communications solution of voice, video, and secure data available in a rapidly deployable satellite package.

Spacenet Senior Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Development David Myers said, “Connexstar Digital Phone is different from traditional VoIP based services that leverage the open public Internet to provide inexpensive long distance calls. By contrast, the Digital Phone service is designed with mission critical businesses and emergency response personnel in mind. Our services are optimized to provide carrier quality calls over a privately owned and operated satellite infrastructure and connect directly to the public switched telephone network.”

With a focus on being the high-performance choice in satellite communications, Spacenet’s Connexstar Digital Phone employs the latest generation in satellite optimized voice technologies. Customer voice calls are separated from Internet, data, and video traffic on the network, through special “voice only” channels to ensure call throughput and quality. Spacenet’s Connexstar services are based on technology developed by Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., a leading VSAT satellite telephony provider.

Features of Connexstar Digital Phone include: toll-quality voice performance, integration with existing networks, local phone number assignment and phone number portability, as well as support for mobile 911 services. Customers pay a per-line monthly fee in addition to competitive per-minute charges for calls terminating outside the Connexstar Digital Phone network. Connexstar Digital Phone service can be used either with Spacenet’s standalone SkyEdge VSAT terminals or with the Cisco IP Satellite Network Module. The service is deployable in fixed or transportable configurations and is available in full-time or on-demand (part-time) packages.
